The second assignment that I decided to create for this week can be found under the Visual Assignments and is worth 1 star. I decided to name this assignment “Picture Me This…” For this second assignment I decided to have people take any random picture and place themselves in the picture in a very random way. When completing this assignment I decided to take a picture of one of my favorite players from my favorite soccer team (Wayne Rooney from Manchester United). I got a picture off of google of him kicking a soccer ball. After getting this picture I thought I’d find a very ridiculous picture of myself and simply replace the soccer ball with my face. In order to do this I made the picture of my face a lot smaller (to fit over the soccer ball) then I simply went to the Paintbrush app on my Mac and placed my face over the soccer ball in the picture. I then, uploaded this new picture onto my flickr account and tagged it correctly and this is what I got …
Also make sure to check out my tutorial on this assignment!!
The first assignment that I created for DS106 is found in the Video Assignment section. I wrote up all the information on how to complete this assignment and then I decided to do it myself. The assignment is called Triple M: Mix, Movies, Memories. This assignment is worth three stars and below is an example of what I did with this assignment :
The idea behind this video is that “A Walk to Remember” is one of my all time favorite movies and this is one of my favorite scenes as well. Then I simply found a clip that I thought would fit perfectly into this scene somewhere … and add a little funk to the original scene. Since the scene from “A Walk to Remember” included a fighting snippet, I decided on getting a video of professional boxers and inserting that into the original clip. I chose to take a little portion of this clip on boxers and then insert it in the scene, while taking out what actually happens in the scene (simply because this is a little more exciting). I then downloaded both scenes onto my laptop using www.keepvid.com and imported them into my iMovie. Once I had them both up I simply cropped, cut, and fiddled around with the scenes in order to create exactly what I wanted. Once I was done, I uploaded the new clip onto my youtube account and tagged it as VideoAssignments and VideoAssignments825 in order for my example to be seen. Below is the video I created off of my very own assignment idea:
As DS106ers one of the main things that we focused on was the “Daily Creates”. We were asked to make two daily creates for future DS106 students to complete. Earlier this semester we posted one of our daily create ideas already …. I decided to keep that idea and then just create another one along side.
Daily Create Idea 1: Take a picture of the first thing you remember from your dream once you wake up.
I’m pretty sure that’s the daily create that I came up with (or really similar to it, probably not word for word). This daily create fits under the Photography portion. Simply upload this on your flickr account … and include the tags provided.
Daily Create Idea 2: Draw a picture combining your two favorite cartoon characters (ex: Spongebob & Dora).
This daily create fits under the drawing category and can be interpreted in various ways. The goal is to be as creative as you’d like in order to display two of your favorite cartoons in one picture. An idea being the head of Dora on Spongebob’s square body?
RemixThis: This week we focused a great deal on Remixes and this is my post about the concept of Remixing media.
Mashup/Remix Assignments: For this week I did the movie trailer assignment along with the album cover remix assignment. My assignments totaled 7 Stars.
Remix Assignment: For this week I completed my own version of a remix assignment…. using someone else’s old work.
Reflection: This weeks work for Mashup/Remix assignments was actually really interesting. After starting off with the concept of remix and how the the majority of the material that I have sen throughout my lifetime has actually been a form of remix is amazing. It’s crazy to realize that all of the things in this world have been combined and remixed together in order to create something new by someone else. Media is very interesting in those terms because you would never be able to figure out that all of this material has actually been used before in a different manner. It was interesting to see a lot of other students do remix assignments as well….you actually get a chance to see how other people interpret work and the crazy and interesting ideas that come from combining different materials. I’ve always been a huge fan of remixed songs, but I guess I never realized that all media is a form of remix in a way. This segment helps open our eyes into seeing that material can actually be reused and one small piece of work can actually be a starting point for something new. I think I got a good idea of how to combine my work and how to take an idea that I’ve had in my head and use someone else idea to make it my own. Yayyyyy!
During this week we were asked to create a remix assignment using the DS106 remix assignment website. The goal of this week was to take an assignment that was already completed and remix it based off of what the remix card suggested. I clicked on the remix generator a few times until I found an assignment that I thought was possible. The assignment that I was asked to remix was the “Colorize your World Assignment” and the remix card was “Turn up the Cheese”….This remix card asked of this “Use the worst, over the top design elements in an assignment. Use Arial or Papyrus fonts, green and pink colors, sappy music to make an assignment be the epitome of badness (not the good kind of bad).” After looking through various assignments completed by students apart of DS106 … either this year or years in the past, I decided on the assignment I thought I could remix the best. I ran across this post and thought that the story made enough sense so I figured I would remix it and see what I could do. Using paintbrush on my Mac and the iphoto settings I contrasted this assignments picture and then added a few funny looking features to make Dora The Explorer turn from completely normal to absolutely weird. I didn’t really know what to put to make a cartoon character look “bad”, but I figured making her look strange would be a good start. This is the original picture that I made a remix to :
After a few of my own edits and some fun with paintbrush… this is my Remixed version of Dora:
I think she actually looks a little less attractive and it’s obvious that I wasn’t trying to make her look presentable. She has some awesome highlights and really weird looking eyes …. I kind of like it in a strange way.
During this weeks Remix segment, we were asked to complete 7 stars worth of Mashup Assignments. The first assignment that I decided to do for this segment was to create a Movie Trailer Mashup. This assignment asked to take a movie trailer and have the audio be completely opposite of what the movie actually represents. For this assignment I decided to take the movie trailer of one of my favorite movies “Bridesmaids” and make the audio of the trailer sound as if it’s a scary, when in reality it’s one of the funniest movies I’ve seen. The audio trailer that I used was of the movie “The Apparition“. The reason I used this movie was because I thought that the audio course of events sounded like it would go really well with that of the Bridesmaid trailer. I downloaded both movie trailers onto my computer using www.keepvid.com then I uploaded Bridesmaid’s into my iMovie, but took the Apparition trailer and uploaded it into audacity in order to get the audio. I then combined both the trailer (muted) and the audio in order to produce a scary version of the Bridesmaid trailer and make my own Remix. This assignment was very interesting to do simply because I have already seen the bridesmaid and I know that it’s not a scary movie….. when I added the scary sound to the trailer it made it a lot more interesting. I felt like I was getting ready to watch an entirely different movie. I was also surprised to see how well this specific audio fit into the movie trailer, I didn’t expect them to go so well hand in hand. This Mashup Assignment was worth 4 stars. I can officially say that I’ve made my own remix!!! It’s awesome to see how easy it can be to combine different forms of media in order to produce a new product that no one else has ever done.
Bridesmaids Trailer Remix:
Total= 4/7 Stars!
This week our main focus is on the idea of “remix”. Remix can be defined as “combining and editing existing materials to create something new” according to the first video I watched by Kirby Ferguson. Remixes can be found anywhere, at this day in age it may be safe to say that almost everything out there is a form of remix. The idea of remix is taking something that’s already been created and possibly adding your own “flavor” to it, or adding something that maybe the original was missing. Remixes can be seen in all forms of media and interpreted in various ways. The videos posted by Kirby Ferguson about “Everything is a Remix” actually make a great deal of sense. Remixes began with music and over time have made their way into all media sources and have created a whole new outlook on media. We were asked to view some of the examples of Remix in order to get a better understanding of what our work will consist of. This first example that I watched was the “Disney used to explain copyright” video in which disney movies explained what “copyright” meant. This video showed an example of remix because it took snippets of various disney movies and created a definition for copyright. The remix is shown through the idea of taking something that already exists (the different movies) and creating something knew by combining them. This person cut out words from the movies that would explain the meaning of copyright, then combined them all together. I thought this whole video was very creative, it showed a lot of different movies but ensured that disney knew they were not copyrighting their material. At the beginning of a video there is a statement announcing that none of the material is being stolen and that it is initially from “Walt Disney”. Another example of a remix that I watched was the video of “Star Wars, Call me Maybe“. This video took a song that is pretty popular and known in the world today and combined it with a movie that is popular as well. This person used the Star Wars movie in order to “sing” out the songs to Call me maybe by Carly Rae Jepson. This was a very creative idea because not many people would think to combine these two specific forms of media and create a remix for both of them. The copyright portion was covered by the credits given to both the Star Wars movie and the Carly Rae Jepson song. I think both of these examples showed very interesting forms of remix. They represented the idea of combining different media forms very well, both videos were very entertaining and catchy. Can’t wait to get a swing at some of my own remixes!!!!
For my final project I have decided to focus on a character from my favorite TV show. The goal is to tell a story of the character “Peyton Sewyer” from One Tree Hill that sums up her life in the way that it is shown through the show. I decided to focus on Peyton because I’ve recently been watching the entire series and I realized that there are so many different ways that I could go about describing Peyton’s life. She is a character that is very important to this series, because not only is she involved in the overall plot and purpose of the show, but throughout the show she has her own internal problems and external problems that she ultimately overcomes. I chose her out of all the characters because I think that she represents a very strong, independent woman that deals with her issues head-on and never seizes to surprise you.
I decided to narrow down my story of Peyton’s like to her high school years and the many things you learn about her character and her problems during those years. I plan on using various media pieces to tell my story:
Audio: Peyton is very big on her music and making it a huge part of her life and the show, I plan on using audio by making a playlist of some of the songs that she plays in her “podcast” …. her “podcast” is a huge part of the character she is because she plays music on the internet for the public to hear. Throughout episodes depending on how she’s feeling, she plays songs to represent her emotions.
Visual/Design: Peyton is a very artistic and creative character, that is stuck in a stereotypic role while in high school, but in reality she is completely opposite of that. I plan on using visuals/design to create a collage of some of the drawings that she does herself and also making some that represent her emotions.
Video: Another major aspect to Peyton’s character is her webcast that she has throughout the show. During this webcast she allows for the public to watch her every move that occurs while in her room. This includes other characters coming in and out and also gives away a lot during the show. I plan on either making a video of a broadcast that imitates Peyton, or making a video of a webcam showing of my own life (I haven’t really narrowed it down yet).
Seeing as this is just a proposal some of this may change, or be altered a little …. It will all depend how much information I can get off of the internet that represents what I want to do for Peyton’s character.
This week we worked a lot with Video Assignments and learning to tell stories in various ways through Video. Here are a few assignments that I decided to do…
Video Assignment 1: The Silent Era; this particular assignment was worth 5 stars and I got to use a lot of different effects of video making in order to make it.
Video Assignment 2: The 5 movie Archetype; this assignment was worth 3 stars and I allowed me to learn the technique of cropping clips and placing them together to tell a story of an archetype.
Video Assignment 3: The Movie with the stereo on; for this assignment I mainly focused the process of how music and video go hand in hand a lot of the time. This assignment was also worth 3 stars for this week.
Video Assignment 4: The 5 second movie; this 3 star assignment allowed me to finally be a director and tell some type of story in 5 minutes…. I chose to crack a little joke in those 5 seconds.
Video Assignment 5: The Framed assignment; was an assignment that incorporated the picture aspect of a video and was worth 2 stars.
Reflection: These past two weeks I got to take a swing at working with Video and learning to tell stories through them as well. I attempted to do various assignments that allowed me to worth with different aspects of video, such as … music, picture, sound, and even directing. I learned to tell a story using so many different aspects of video and I finally began using my iMovie on my computer …. something I haven’t really gotten a chance to use since I’ve gotten my Mac. I also really enjoyed getting a chance to look at everyone else’s work and how other people were interpreting the assignments. It was nice that we got two weeks to do everything because I know I personally had some difficulty not only thinking of movies and scenes to use for some of the assignments, but also being patient enough to learn about iMovie and how to make everything work out the way I wanted. Telling stories through movie and personal interpretation was also a good learning experience for me …. simply because you don’t always focus on actual details of Video until you have to do assignments like this. It was a fun experience …. and although I dreaded doing some of the work because I thought it was so difficult at first … once I got a hang of what I wanted to do and how to use my sources it all turned out really well. I hope people enjoy my assignments and they make sense to them as well. I think the 5 second movie or the archetype are probably my favorite ones…. but I obviously like them all. I honestly believe these video assignments all showed a lot about how storytelling works and the various ways that stories can be told. I did 5 different videos this week and each assignment showed something new about how a story can be told and seen. It was also a very good way of putting together all of the work we’ve done this semester in terms of telling stories digitally. Video in itself is truthfully a great way to tell stories.
